Until looking at the first and third links' abstracts I was unaware of the betaxanthin fluorescence. Notice too that it took narrow band laser excitation with confocal microscopy to detect the fluorescence. It would be nice to read the entire first article to see if the fluorescence is masked by the rest of the flower's reflectance spectrum or if it can be detected with natural lighting and visible light photography. Unfortunately, the server would not respond to download the entire article. I will try later.

Until the betaxanthins were mentioned, the only fluorescent flowers I knew of were those produced by genetic modification. It would be interesting to get a list of those species exhibiting fluorescence, since by the first article's abstract not all the Caryophyllales fluoresce.

The second article is only for dessicated herbarium specimens and relates to the pollen targets some flowers exhibit in the UV. The pollen targets I have seen in images, and actually photographed, are increased absorption of UV wavelengths, so they appear darker than the surrounding petal portions in live specimens rather than fluorescing.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

To clarify things a bit, there are NO naturally fluorescent flowers, so that is not the problem.
