Mark,
Recently I've actually used the Monaco Optix Pro software with an Optix Pro
colorimeter (DTP94) to profile a monitor (a Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP) whose
gamut is very close to Adobe RGB.
The Optix Pro did a very good job of it. My impression is that the
capabilities of this excellent colorimeter go well beyond the gamuts of
monitors that were around back when it first hit the market. Which would
denote a commendably forward-looking vision on the part of the
manufacturers.
I don't know how much farther than AdobeRGB the Optix Pro would be able to
go in sampling wide monitor spaces, but I think that for now it's probably a
good alternative to a spectrophotometer -- at least for those of us who
happen to have one, since it's no longer available directly from XRite
(though it can still be acquired in specialized bundles from other vendors).
Marco
