When I worked for Thom Kinkade, our rendering intent du jour was absolute colorimetric. Our goal was an exact match of his paintings. I saw some pretty awful attempts by local offset printers even with specific instructions about how to handle the rendering intent.
Even worse, our new manager sent someone to China with digital files and prints to match on a Chinese press. Having been kept out of the loop on that one, I found out later that nobody even looked into how they were proofing or printing before they left the US. Consequently, the employee got a free vacation and the images were not acceptably printed on their presses.
With the media white point, the absolute rendering intent white point, and the viewing conditions white point all in play, matching an absolute colorimetric rendered image is a tough job.
