Hello Barry, and list.
Several months ago, I posted my results on this list with my
experience with Shades.
A client had a new iMac 24 inch and she claimed it was way to
bright. I had custom .icc profiled her previous LCD without incident.
So, I downloaded Shades and tried it on three different Macs in my
studio environment, non of which where the new Intel iMac. After
some experimentation I settled on profiling her new Intel iMac 24 inch
without Shades on. I lower the luminance as low as possible. Once I
was completely satisfied with the custom .icc profile (I am never ever
satisfied with Apple display) I turned on Shades and brought down the
brightness I had previously chosen with Shades on, but not actually
profiling. I did this twice with her iMac.
What tells me this works is her custom .icc profiled printer, prints
images very closely matched her iMac display. She wins. Everyone
wins.
I never tell clients I will give them 100% perfection. To dangerous!
When this was previously posted there was a comment that what I was
doing was not going to work. I don't challenge those thoughts. It
has worked for my client.
Summarizing, I use Shades and spectrophotometer to peg the luminance
level I am looking for. Then with Shades off, and the luminance as
low as it will go, I profile the monitor. Once I have chosen the
profile to be used, I turn on Shades.
Thank you for your prompt consideration and response.
Sincerely,
