Derek,
I don't know why you're having poor results with mentioned profiling
packages. I have used all the programs that you mention and get very good
results.
Alternatively, here's a simple albeit primitive way around it. If you can
photograph the images with a color control strip and grayscale ramp in the
image, you can get reasonably good balanced color with just a couple quick
clicks in Photoshop. I prefer to use the Kodak Gray Scale, which has 20
stepped patches including white and black (Q-13, CAT 152 7654),
http://tinyurl.com/p7yy5h
I usually just use the LEVELS eye droppers. Set my highlight dropper to
about 245R, 245G, 245B and then click once in the pure WHITE patch on the
grayscale. Then I set my shadow dropper to about 12R, 12G, 12B, and click on
the solid BLACK patch. Then finally I keep the midtone dropper at 128R,
128G, 128B, and click in the midtone patch (marked "M" on the Kodak scale).
No, this is NOT as accurate a GOOD custom profile, but you'd be amazed at
how much better the results can be. Of course the results would be best if
you could get the control stips under the glass with the image.
Good luck.
Bob

Subject: digital camera profiling
I have few cameras that we have trouble getting accurate color. We used them
for reproduction of very old printed pieces mainly but also old paintings.
Some of them are under glass and cannot be removed because of their price
and insurance requirements. We use polarized filters on lenses and polarized
gels on strobes not to get reflections. This is studio setup with controlled
strobes.
Any suggestion what can I do to make custom color profiles. I tried
ProfileMaker, Monaco Profiler and BasicColor Input with ColorChecker SG and
none of the custom profiles I made are close enough. Should I even bother
with profiling?
I need the best possible color reproduction when there is no need for
mousing around in Photoshop with making masks and selective color
corrections. I don't mind one glogal correction but don't have time for
selections and local corrections. All of this art is going to be printed in
a catalog on a sheetfed offset press and sold on auction.
My cameras: few Hasselblad H2 with Leaf Aptus 22 Backs using Leaf Capture
software and one Sinar P2 using Sinar software.
