Peter,
This idea of "flat-fielding" monitors is nothing new. The better
cameras
have had such a feature for a long time and now, that idea is
starting to
turn out in large format displays too.
To my knowledge, it's currently being implemented in software, in
the more
expensive soft proofing packages, as Mike alluded to earlier. And
obviously,
it's not implemented through "having to create 128 icc profiles", as
you can
imagine, yet with no noticeable performance degradation.
My company writes one of those high end softproofing packages you are
alluding to, and we have decided not to implement such a feature until
it can be fully automated as it would be incorrectly used and abused
by our users.

This kind of compensation is impractical. Calibrating the monitor
becomes a time consuming chore and users would quickly switch back to
a single calibration, measured in the middle of the screen. Imagine
having to create 128 icc profiles just to compensation for the non
linearities of the back lighting in cheaper monitors!
