Peter,
This idea of "flat-fielding" monitors is nothing new. The better cameras
have had such a feature for a long time and now, that idea is starting to
turn out in large format displays too.
To my knowledge, it's currently being implemented in software, in the more
expensive soft proofing packages, as Mike alluded to earlier. And obviously,
it's not implemented through "having to create 128 icc profiles", as you can
imagine, yet with no noticeable performance degradation.
