Hi Marco
Thanks for your responses. I appreciate your point of view and this is
absolutely an exercise in establishing cost versus benefit for my intended
applications.
In regard to my "observation" on comparable quality out of gimp and
photoshop, I have used both so it is not as if I don't have direct
experience. At the end of the day it is a value judgement on image quality
but my images seem to compare favourably with my peers at least and that
keeps ME happy. Can I ask you a question? Have you any experience using
GIMP? I am aware of what gimp currently can and can't do so yes there are
some shortcomings but I stand by what I see on the printed page. And at the
end of the day the price is right!!!
And yes, redundant for ME as it is my journey on which I hope to find the
tools and workflow that achieve what I want to achieve and be still able to
afford. I'm not seeking to advocate one thing or another to you or anyone
else. I chose my tools, found some shortcomings and have been seeking to
address them in the way that seems best to me. I simply can't justify
dropping a grand on software that does little more than the free software I
am currently using. I'm more than happy to expend a great deal of time and
effort in investigating my workarounds. It is a computing culture I have
long been a part of as a scientist working in a computational area for many
years where more often than not the tools for your application simply don't
exist or are unaffordable on a research budget. I actually get a bit of a
kick out of the process. In fact, I'll go to some lengths to figure a cheap
and cheerful way of getting things done if I can manage it! I accept that
this would not be feasible in a commercial environment. Perhaps that is
were our opinions are most likely to differ?
Anyway, thanks for the engaging discussion.
Cheers
James
