It can't do 16 bit yet.  At least not in the stable release.  But it is
coming.  Another vote from me for UFRAW.  I tend to do a lot with the image
in UFRAW while still at 16-bit before cutting over to GIMP for fine-tuning.
Currently I have to go to 8-bit ultimately for printing anyway.  UFRAW and
GIMP play very well together.

I also find the GMIC toolbox, formerly known as GreyCstoration, to have some
excellent noise handling features, among others which again plug in nicely
with gimp.  If you are a GIMP user and have not tried this I recommend it.
The preview dialog is a bit clunky but the results are encouraging.  That is
probably a bit of a euphemism for GIMP all up really!
