Marco,
Of course, the GIMP cannot do 16 bit editing and CMYK conversions etc
which disqualifies it from prepress. However, the built-in UFRaw
camera converter can render superb 16-bit Tiff files, and original
file quality sometimes still matters to some photographers.
As an RGB tool for high quality Raw conversion of a single image at a
time, GIMP stands right next to Capture One, in my opinion, just after
the manufacturer proprietary tools (Canon DPP, Nikon NX2).
Of course, Photoshop incorporates a very good, commercially successful
Raw converter, but the real advantages of using Photoshop or Lightroom
in practice have more to do with workflow than with file quality or
color renderings.
