Download a known good reference target. That is the best way to tell
if it monitor brightness or error in the printing process.
Bill Atkinson also has a very good color test target, comprised of
numerous images that push the gamut in most saturated colors, as well
as about every color and greyscale ramp you can think of. It's in the
Profile Test Images link on this page

Uwe Steinmueller at Outbackphoto.com has a smaller and modified
version of this image. Overall I still like Atkinson's a little
better, just because I don't see a reason not to print all of the
images (if you have a large format printer). However, the one
difference is an inclusion of a very good black and white image.. You
can find it here

and a pretty good article about how he uses it here

Hi group. Recenlty bought a 7900 and after profiling the printer and
monitor (x-rite) I'm getting prints that are consistantly too dark
by about 1/2 stop. Using Eizo monitor and Color Navigator. Anyone
have any thoughts on this? It's a pretty fair size investment in
printer, xrite and Eizo not to be much tighter. I'm not a prepress
person or someone with a techy background so please keep responses
easy to understand. Thanks for any help offered.
