Indeed.
This is an interesting thread... at least the parts that apply to the thread.
My concern is the commingling of ColorSync and ICC technology, responsibility and scope.
As it stands, ColorSync is a good implementation of ICC technology (IMHO). That doesn't mean that there isn't work to do but I personally believe that the needs are varied and responsibility belongs in different camps:
- advanced color processing - As Apple has chosen ColorSync to be an implementation of ICC technology I don't think there's much to be done in ColorSync unless they depart from the ICC architecture. In other words, I think that the logical place for advanced work to occur is at the ICC. I see signs of that occurring but I realize that it takes a fairly long time AND that the parties in the ICC are likely to act in ways only sanctioned by the companies they represent. While I don't think it means that things get torpedoed but their priorities may not be the same as yours/ours.
- print path nightmares - the responsibility for this lies with Apple, Adobe AND the printer manufactures (and the software development firms that they use). I personally believe that Apple needs to be the party to take a stronger, clearer role in developing communication standards to ensure MUCH more effective coordination along the print path. If I decide I want Photoshop to do my color management then everything else downstream should bloody well listen or be shunned from any Apple endorsement or support. ALSO, I should be able to turn all color management OFF and the same compliance occur.
The print path cooperation is a joint effort but I think that Apple is in a great position to swing its weight around and do some good. In reality this may be going on behind the scenes and if it is, I am thankful.
my 2 bits at least.
Regards,
Steve
