There is a saying that functioning standards are designed by
engineers, while standards designed by committees are just ... paper.
And I am afraid that this saying is exactly what is happening with
color management.
There is a huge hole in the center of the ICC designed CMS: THE USER
IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MEASUREMENT, CALIBRATION AND PROFILING USING THIRD
PARTY TOOLS. THE USER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR WORKFLOW AND RGB TO CMYK
CONVERSIONS. Now, in reality, screens do not self-calibrate, many RGB
inkjets printers don't self-profile, presses don't as far as I know
automatically adhere to a standard. And the guy who is supposed to do
RGB2CMYK has no idea of the press profile. Now the idea of the press
guys being a responsible guy sounds nice, but it requires training and
time, and it just won't happen that often outside Heidelberg or Tokyo.
And the concept of press communicating with prepress sounds a bit like
western civilization: A nice idea.
