Yep, it seems hard to understand how such a display could be made to work at all,
never mind work well.
Print relies on the "filters" being stacked one on top of the other.
LCD displays already loose 50% of the light due to polarisation losses,
so stacking LCD's will lead to very inefficient displays.
This is one of the reasons that color "electronic ink" type displays
are so awful. Stacking electronic filters while not loosing maximum
transmissivness is really hard. There are some good ideas out there
for solving that, but I'm not sure if any translate to back lit
displays.
