Personally, I look for a "reset" command in the monitor's OSD controls, and
execute that command whenever available, every time I calibrate and profile
a display. Next, I will set the luminance level to the desired amount. Only
if the white point is heavily blue or red, or the luminance is much too
bright, then I will fiddle with the individual RGB controls, if they are
available.
In the displays that don't offer that kind of controls, like the Apple
Cinema Displays, I just set a target luminance and take it from there.
Most of the time I use native white point, which these days often seems to
be anywhere between 5500-6500 Kelvin. Nothing more radical than that.
Most clients are not that demanding when it comes to the white point. They
just want a display whose color looks reliable enough, which is the case
once calibration and profiling have been done properly. Only very few
customers will demand a precise white point that matches that of a nearby
desktop light booth.
By and large, clients want "good enough", whether we personally approve or
disapprove of that. I always make it a point of leaving my "disapproving
hat" at home, and not argue beyond a mild offering of available options. :-)
