Hi,
quite often the list members are asked for monitor recommendations.
The "best" monitor for a specific use case depends on several
idividual criteria, so a general answer will often not be the best
help possible. Besides that often the needs are similar. Hardware
aspects like viewing cone characteristics, uniformity, warm-up
behavior and of course size and resolution are important. The first
first two can be tested visually with some suited test pictures.
I want to point you to the Fogra Monitor Test pictures we created as
part of the softproof research project [1] together with users and
companies using or producing softproofing systems. The pictures proved
to be very useful for visual excimantion of the above mentioned
monitor characteristics.
This is a set of three files. The first one contains several pictures
which are really helpful to visually determine possible colour (this
includes contrast) changes of the monitor. Besides that the pictures
help to judge the uniformity of the display, check for dead pixels and
test if the display shows "ghost pictures" when the same content is
shown for a longer time span. Unfortunatelly currently the
documentation is only in german. If someone wants to volunteer to make
a translation we're open for offers and ideas :-) But even without the
documentation I think that most pictures are self-explaining if you
use them to check the display (in full screen mode).

Besides that there is another set which can be used as a background
picture on the desktop to help to see if something wrecks up in the
monitor calibration:

The second file is an artifical gradient. Can be used as a background
picture (I personally use this, although the other version also has
some benefits -- it's a matter of choice to some extent). The gradient
is especially useful to judge if the calibration of a monitor went
fine. So another approach is to look at the gradient after the
calibration and then to use the above desktop background picture.

Last not least not everybody might be aware that Fogra tests monitors
as part of a Softproofing System certification (therefore sometimes
called Fogra monitor PreCert). The list of the succesfully tested
monitors can give a first idea which monitors might be interesting to
choose from:

Of course this list is not exclusive and other montiors not tested (so
far) could also be of interest for professional graphic arts use.
If you like to see which Softproofing Systems have been certified so
far you can have a look at:

Input on the test pictures or other matters are welcome at my address

Best regards
Peter
