Dear Peter
Thanks for the information.
Last not least not everybody might be aware that Fogra tests monitors
as part of a Softproofing System certification (therefore sometimes
called Fogra monitor PreCert). The list of the succesfully tested
monitors can give a first idea which monitors might be interesting to
choose from:
I see that both the NEC SpectraView monitors I have had here recently
are listed in the Fogra tests but my own experience of the 3090 and the
271 are less than satisfactory. I rejected three of their 3090
SpectraView monitors and recently three of their SpectraView 271
monitors. Yes they were all the specially selected screens, and all were
set for the maximum screen uniformity and were calibrated and profiled
with the supplied software too.
When displaying a 230,230,230 file the colour of the screen was
progressively redder and brighter as one looked from the bottom left to
the top right of the screen. Quite unacceptable IMO for critical colour
work and quite disconcerting especially when working with very light
neutral subjects. Oh yes, all the work surfaces and walls here are
grey and so are the computer desktops etc. No reflection problems and
the lighting is carefully controlled plus I wear neutral colours when
working<G>
It was exactly the same when the monitors were run on a totally
different computer, different OS, different graphics card and in a
different room. It is interesting to report that an Eizo screen run on
both computers displayed an almost perfectly even grey for both colour
and brightness apart from a small area at bottom left which had a hint
of green. Shame this was only a 24" screen. I had been advised not to
consider the Eizo 30" on the basis that it was unlikely to be
sufficiently even due to the increased size.
Whilst I'm sure that the monitors tested by Fogra performed as per test
and were perfectly satisfactory, the mere fact that I have had six poor
NEC SpectraView monitors makes me question the value of such tests as
much obviously will depend on the quality control criteria a
manufacturer has in place for monitors released through the normal sales
channels.
Cheers
Richard
