"Will never" and "impossible" are a bit strong Terry. I personally would
trade those with "Sometimes might not" and "less than certain" in the
paragraph above. ;)
We print stochastic nearly 100% of the time, and also nearly always
without using a device-link to a custom press profile. Our press to
proof matches are on the large part visually matching quite nicely. The
issues that have come into play are indeed in 1/4 tone areas,
particularly with pastels. However, we print ivories on a daily basis
(lots of figurines and dinnerware) with great visual matches.
Device-link would certainly be a better route to alleviate these
issues...well, for the most part. We are still talking about offset
printing.
Ragarding mottle, is this occurring in all colors, and on both sides of
the sheet? Have you consulted with your ink supplier in regards to ink
