Hi Mike,
I’m not sure what the official line is on this. My sense is: the process is tricky and does not explicitly offer the ease or flexibility that a user might expect. Also, from an expectation standpoint, this is not an iterative system like the ones offered by some RIPs, in which they use a proprietary non-ICC table that can repeatedly tweaked for precision. i1Profiler’s implementation of “iteration” is more about supplementing your characterization data with additional values to provide a clearer picture of the device, resulting in a better profile.
To do this, you would need to create a .cxf file and bring it in to the optimization workflow using the “import spot color” method. I did this and it worked awesome. I have spot-file of 2500 grays (5x5 grid at every L* level), that i have used with excellent results. To make this chart, I had to do a bit of homework (and a bit of excel work). Like I said... it’s probably not supported in the way it SHOULD be supported (opnion), but you can do it. All that being said, now that it’s done, I can use the custom spot-color file to optimize any profile. My next mission - should I accept it - will be to build optimization spot-charts for the GRACoL, SWOP, FOGRA targets (the lab values... not the device values).
My last opinion on this (for now) is: the right place to build these target “spot-color libraries” files is actually in PantoneColorManager (where sot-libraries come from). However, the product currently offers no provision for the user to import a set of custom spot color values (only Pantone). Maybe they would need to change the name of the product first. ; )
