This really depends on the integration time used. If it's too short
(the default I suspect with the manufacturers drivers), quantization
and noise dominate. A longer integration time assists greatly, although
the lack of thermal compensation for the black level can become a problem
if there is a very long times between calibrations.
[ie. it's not the hardware as much as the software at play in this issue.]
