Sounds like, for your needs, a 3880, 4900 or 17" Pro 1 (when it arrives) would work well for you. The 4900 is notable as it would have broad RIP support. I completely understand supporting your client's setups though. You could go all out and buy all three brands and have a full suite of a dozen RIPs at your place? LOL! I've certainly found that I need to own the full set of RIPs and have lots of experience with them. Having a system setup to play with on your own time is great while the learning curve is being climbed. Once you're there though and have a full set of notes on all the ins and outs and particularities of each RIP I doubt you'll be making lots of prints in house for support purposes at least.
My clients are getting all sorts of stuff every month I could never dream of getting myself - 3 meter UV curable, latex, eco solvent, silver halide printers, etc. In the end, having great relationships with local clients with the latest greatest stuff is the key. When my best clients get new printers they invite me in to play with them for a few days, and I have all the time and consumables I need to run extensive tests and make notes. I charge them for the few hours spent making final adjustments and come out a little wiser having tested a wide variety of methodologies. Its great for both parties. This, along with good note taking, makes support easy and lessons the need for having it all in-house.
