I really don't know as I've never tried it. What would be the difference if instead of ACR and this calibration process, it was another raw converter with ICC camera profiles?

True but the idea was to use CC filters with your strobes shooting a gray card so after it was developed, it looked gray! And no, there was no measurement process here, good old Ish at A&I would look at your film tests under a Fluorescent light box and give guidance on the appropriate filters to make that gray look gray (he had amazing color vision, something some photographers lack).
