Not profiling per se. What he did was alter the Calibration tab such that the Lab values of the Macbeth rendered from ACR matched the Lab values of the target itself**. Colorimetric accuracy?
Then one would keep said Calibration settings for other work. After that, a few people produced 'scripts' that would achieve the settings without trial and error movement. After that, Adobe added DNG custom and edited profiles into the engine itself.

Absolutely! ETTR or otherwise, photogrpahers need to understand then produce ideal exposure just as we did in the film days. We never trusted the stated ISO settings (especially for neg film). We needed to buy film in large bulk, all the same emlusion lot, run exposure and processing tests and decide what CC filter pack produced what today we call "white balance". We stuck with the same lab to process the film and made sure they following consistent processing (back in the day, this is what put A&I Color on the map). I don't think anything has changed with digital. We need to test exposure + development and the later is happening in the raw converter we choose. This is far, far more important than colorimetric accuracy or let's just say all photographers need to nail this process first and foremost. It's photography 101.
