Hmmm, I think I've worked out what's happening here.
The Finder and Dock are using the monitor profile as the default RGB colour space!
The wider the monitor gamut the greater the discrepancy between the colours that you're used to working with in a colour managed workflow and the crazy colours that are displayed in the Finder in 10.8.
If you use the 10.8 Digital Color Meter utility and set it to return AdobeRGB colour values then you get clipping warnings popping up everywhere.
I checked the 10.6 display profiles for the PA271W and they are similar to those we've created in 10.8 versions -- but the 10.6 Finder doesn't have radioactive icons so must assign a smaller RGB colour profile to the icons.
Apple are making it very difficult for professional colour work at the moment -- we have NO Mac Pros in Europe at the moment and a badly colour managed OS that is very difficult to use for colour critical work…
[I also discovered yesterday that Epson's SpectroProofer Utility no longer works properly in 10.8.3 either]
Windoze beckons :(
