That's a very apropos comparison.
I bought -- paid cash for -- an unlocked iPhone a couple years ago at an Apple retail store, and stopped by T-Mobile on the way home to get a prepaid SIM. At any time I could have decided they sucked and switched to any other GSM carrier, including the Death Star. T-Mobile has just now started offering no-contract monthly plans that I'd switch to if I made a lot of mobile phone calls, but they're not making any moves to make me give up my prepaid plan. And, still, I own the phone outright and retain the right to do with it as I please.
I like T-Mobile's business practices and will continue to do business with them so long as they continue to offer what I want at a price I'm willing to pay.
What Adobe is trying to do is turn themselves into Ma Bell, and I'll have nothing to do with that.
Nor, as is clear, will a significant number of their historically most loyal customers.
Seems stupid to stop offering your customers what they're asking you to sell to them. Off them new products and services, yes, sure, of course. But why drive customers away?
It'll be curious to see how this plays out on the stock market as well....
Cheers,
b&
