He's not. There is a *lot* of precedence for even worse, with the poster child being Microsoft and PlaysForSure:

Will there someday be a PlaysForSure moment with the Creative Cloud, causing sudden widespread inability to access your own creative work the same way that Microsoft customers were unable to play the music they had previously paid for? If so, will there be enough warning to permit you to migrate your documents to some sort of alternative? Will there even be an alternative?
Can you afford to take that chance?
Unless you're an hobbyist, I can't see how those risks could possibly outweigh the reward of a new filter to save a shot you yourself ruined by poor technique / too slow a shutter / forgetting to turn on IS. *Especially* considering it'll cost you more for the privilege.
