I bought an Epson 10000XL a couple of years back to use as a test unit to see how it compared with our SCSI scanners - ScanView F10, Fuji Lanovia C-550 and our PMT drum scanners.
The software was a bit of a nightmare to lock down — no matter what setup and preferences you use it will attempt to auto-range the scans to produce a *pleasing* result.
I did manage to lock it down eventually — can’t recall exactly how, but remember it being a little fiddly — and then profile it using custom targets for Kokak Endura, Fuji Gloss and Fuji Super Gloss.
The results were *passable* but no competition for old pro kit like the Lanovia. Steep curves will easily highlight the unevenness of the light source and the corrections that the scanner is making to counteract this.
There’s also a distinctive “crunchiness" about the colour transitions that isn’t at all attractive once you’ve spotted it.
It’s a difficult decision if you need to scan larger artworks as you’ve got very limited options in this market nowadays:
1. The cheap, passable quality, consumer level option of the Epson 10000XL
2. Expensive, higher quality but hard-to-maintain (and train staff) old-school SCSI scanners.
I believe that there is also an A2 flatbed scanner that is manufactured by a supplier that make the scanners for large format maps and architectural plans, but haven’t been able to get a demo unit to test. Has anybody on this group had a look at this scanner?
PS. I still use an old PC Windoze version of ProfileMaker to make scanner profiles as it will accept *any* chart providing the text file is correctly formatted. I really hope that i1 Profiler will be able to do this at some point...
