there are other possibilities :- for instance, one thing we did with the
ColorBus RIP was to use a per channel calibration systems. Calibrate to
the same per channel curves (or use pre-canned calibration curves for
a particular print mode) and "hey-presto!" the same ICC profiles gave roughly
the same output. i.e. profiles don't typically get to see raw inkjet print
engine behavior changes, they need to be covered up with a calibration
system so that the apparent device behavior is more reasonable, so
as to be within the range of what a profiler expects.
[ We had three layers of color control to an inkjet 1) "Printer setup"
which involved things like print density, light ink separations and a
gross per channel density limit 2) Per channel calibration curves 3)
ICC profiling and total ink limiting. ]
So there would be no surprise if Epson was doing something similar
in their print driver.
