Hi all,

Just a quick question... my TiBook 550 / 256, OS X 10.2, is proving to be
unacceptably slow building AU with ProjectBuilder, and feels very laggy in
general (compared to the same machine running Classic and building VST
plugins [yes, I know VST is simpler than AU], or the similar-specced Wintel
laptop it shares desk space with [which can build a much more complex
DirectX plug in half the time]).

Anyone working with a machine of this sort of spec? I'm wondering if an
extra 256M ram is going to make all the difference or whether I should
start saving up for a new Powerbook (or even a Dual G4 desktop) already :-(

It's all about bus speed, and I/O speed. I recently got a PowerBook G4/800 and it's noticeably speedier, given it's faster bus speed, so I'd recommend upgrading when you can. Desktop machines with fast I/O will almost always beat powerbooks for shear compilation performance. Heck, my lowly G3/400 with its ultrawide SCSI would always outperform my G4/500 on compiling Mozilla.
