I got it to work like this: install the emi SoundManager driver under
OS 9 (the OS will do this for you if you just plug in the device and
answer "yes" when it asks you if it should search for a USB driver).
With the emi plugged in, boot into OS 9. With the emi still plugged in,
reboot into X; it will be recognized there until the next time you
unplug the emi (or turn it off, I'm not sure which).
