Just as a note, I think Mike is correct in saying not all iMic's have the option for gain control. This is also visible in the Input tab of the Sound preference pane (it displays something like - no settings available for this device).

In the earlier revision iMic's, setting the gain control with the iMic Control is possible but it actually rewrites a bit of the firmware.

There is supposed to be a 2.0 update of the iMic Control tomorrow/Friday which runs under OS X, for those interested.

It sounds like the one iMic that's giving trouble is a bit squirrelly. It's probably causing some failure when the HAL is discovering it's controls. There's probably a HAL bug in there somewhere, but I'd need to get your iMic to track it down.

not all imics have gain controls visible to the HAL. in particular,
the older ones do not. i just purchased some brand new imics a few
weeks ago and was surprised that they _did_ have (HAL) input gain controls.
