I couldn't agree more. Though Bias had a good knob-ish solution in
their Freq plugin. It works like a knob but has good workability with a
mouse like a slider. You can check out a pic on their website.

Please, no knobs! Knobs are for fingers, not for mice. Just because
they exist in the real world does not mean they are extendable to user
interfaces.
Instead, try to use sliders. They *are* consistent in interfaces. Use
buttons to turn on/off something.
