That's fine for parameters with min and max values - but for things such as a surround pan control continuous around 360 degress, I can't see any obviouus alternative to the 'alpha wheel', whether in software or hardware. Even a control defining distance as well as azimuth will probably involve rotational mouse movements - and I have never found those particularly difficult anyway. If you can whisk an egg, you can twirl a knob with a mouse.....

Please, no knobs! Knobs are for fingers, not for mice. Just because they exist in the real world does not mean they are extendable to user interfaces.
Instead, try to use sliders. They *are* consistent in interfaces. Use buttons to turn on/off something.
