Please do not put a dummy control on your device. This goes against the very philosophy of the audio system on Mac OS X.

I can't say this often enough or loud enough: You should present your hardware as it is without faking anything.

If it doesn't have a volume control, please don't put a fake one there. You'll save yourself the hassle of having to explain to your users why it is there, but does nothing.

If you have a problem with how the System Prefs works, then you should file a Radar bug. In this case, you don't have to because I filed it a while ago. I can dig up the number if you are interested.

Nope, that the way that code works. If there isn't a control then the
meter isn't drawn. I guess they feel it's not worth showing if you
can't do anything about it.
