The concept of multitimbral comes from hardware synthesizer, where it made sense for cost reasons. But for the virtual studio there is simply a lack of need for something like this. Hence somebody wants to simulate a virtual instrument with say a drum machine and a synthesis part, why shouldn't he create one Audio Unit for the drum machine and one for the synthesis part? There is no disadvantage, but it buys you a lot more flexibility. Of course the virtual counterfeit wouldn't look exactly like the original anymore. But this point is mood, you also can't simulate the feeling of actually touching the keys this > way.

I'm too dumb to argue the technical implementation aspects, but can see why CUSTOMERS might appreciate multitimbral soft synths.

Ferinstance, if a user is in the habit of prototyping an arrangement using generic GM instruments, and then replacing the tracks with real live human musicians--

If the prototype project will have maybe a dozen midi tracks, and the final project will have maybe a dozen MUTED midi tracks plus a dozen or more LIVE audio tracks... The user may not be enthusiastic about the extra work and clutter of adding an additional dozen "expendable" softsynth tracks to the mixer window, just to get a MIDI prototype working.

Have briefly toyed with the Roland VSC DirectX multitimbral synth in Sonar. A single easy-to-setup mixer-window track occupied by a multitimbral softsynth, could offer a definite "simplifying" advantage for song prototype purposes.
