I am not quite sure wether this belongs in here or in the darwin-drivers list.
The Extigy is a usb sound card from Creative Labs, which appears to not comply to the USB audio standard to not work properly with MacOS X. I tried one recently, it got me some popping and crackling HAL audio output and a working MIDI-out device every 1 out of 20 tries. Also, with the Extigy plugged in, the computer crashed sometimes on startup.

You should report the crash as a Radar bug. Apple will fix that. They will probably be interested in finding the other problem, too; although, the crackling could be a hardware problem (24x96 I/O rates are getting pretty dense for USB I).

Now I was wondering if there was any interest in an OS X driver for it - I have tried ALSA/Linux drivers for the card which worked fine and are just minor adaptions to generic USB audio drivers. I know the Extigy is by far not the best audio card and does not deliver the claimed 24/96 quality. However, I think it would still be a bargain if we could get multiple outputs and MIDI connectivity from a single $120 USB device. The guys from usb-audio.com also claim that you could get low-latency audio from the card with their ASIO/Windows driver.

Is anyone interested in writing such a driver? I could help with some development, I wrote a USB MIDI driver for BeOS a while ago. If we could form a team of developers willing to write such a driver, I'd buy such a card and help writing.

It might make more sense to fix the existing USB Audio and MIDI class drivers. They should be in the Darwin tree someplace, right?
