I would definitely encourage you to make it an AU. It just makes
instruments so much more useful and interesting when you can use them in
the programs that you use to make music. With so many software samplers
out there today, I think you'll have quite a difficult time getting anyone
interested if it can't at least be used as a plugin.

Well, there are a couple more benefits to making it an AU:
1) You don't have to make a sequencer.
2) You get effects plugins for free, too, since all of the hosts out
there let you string effect plugin inserts after instrument plugins.
Just my thoughts...
