I'm not on any of those lists but I'll go track them down.

Surely, though, it's bad design that a malfunctioning AU Component could
cause the entire OS to fail to boot, requiring a reinstall?

My guess is that either some dependency of the VST plugins is not yet
loaded and ready at OS-boot time, or they are trying to display an alert or
dialog box but the system's UI resources can't be accessed at that time.
