To my knowledge, there is no driver that supports the new play through
controls yet.
The built-in hardware doesn't have any of those controls physically, so
it doesn't publish them.

Jeff,
Does kAudioDevicePropertyPlayThruVolumeScalar work with built-in
audio? If yes, does it work on all machines? If no, which audio
devices, that you know of, does it work with?
Thanks,
Jeremy

Apps can support the play through controls the HAL and the IOAudio
family added in 10.3. They are published through the HAL as the
properties kAudioDevicePropertyPlayThruVolumeScalar,
kAudioDevicePropertyPlayThruDestination, etc (see
<CoreAudio/AudioHardware for the full list).
Drivers for hardware that has more advanced control over hardware
monitoring should start publishing those controls as IOAudioControls
that have a usage of kIOAudioControlUsagePassThru.

Apps and drivers have yet to catch up with what the system supports
in this area.
What can apps do in this regard that they are not already?
