Certainly. One of the primary design goals of CoreAudio has been
to make small, reusable pieces of code that don't have unnecessary
dependencies or loose encapsulation boundaries.

Sure - you can write your own MP3 file parser and use the
AudioConverter to decode the MP3 packets.
