how to balance channels without affecting the master volume

i can't balance the left and right stereo channels without the master volume sticking. The reason is because when an audiopropertylistener listen to changes at the master volume it calls the left channel listener first then the right, when it calls the left channel listener the right channel volume value has not been updated yet, so their values differ although its a master volume change. And the calls are blocking so i can't figure it out. I know it can be done, because i saw a program which does it. Help
