I managed to create an NxM audio unit that way, which also passed auval - but I was unable to open any multi-channel-output effect in logic.
Sorry but Logic currently does not support any surround plug-ins.

Is there any document available that describes what Logic is capable of or
There is no up-to-date document available right now, we plan to write one though.
It would be helpful if you could send me a list of questions you'd like to see covered in such a document.

what specifications an audio unit is required in order to work in logic?
Logic is designed to be compliant to the AU specification, there should be no special magic needed. If you find some issue here where Logic is out-of-spec, please file a bug report.
Of course, Logic does not cover the entire AU specificaton (e.g. it still lacks surround and offline AU support), but that will be described in the yet-to-be-released document mentioned above.

Best,
Stefan
