Right - while developing, you can use version 0.0.0 to force Logic 8
to reload the information every time, thus saving yourself from
simple typos and other developer errors.
But anything you release to the public should have a unique version
number, so that non-developers are never forced to manually empty the
cache.

You can't change the version number each time you make a typo,
don't you think?
Also, I've had some problems where a symbolic link garbled the name
of the AU. Changing the version number did not fix it.
Sometimes, simply deleting the cache cleans up things.
I'm sure Bill meant when you change names between releases. Not while
developing.
