Isn't part of the problem with this discussion that
Jack and other simillar(?) stuff is an easy way to circumvent
Apple's DRM protection of iTunes store tunes?
The need for, and uses of Jack and similar programs goes far beyond a
teenager or college student trying to rip a copy of his favorite
song. That can be done much easier without Jack.
Throwing a roadblock in the patch of technological progress out of
fear that someone will use the tech for questionable purposes seems a
little bit silly, or short sighted to me.
People are buying music on line in droves, and CD's for the most part
still don't have any DRM. Most audio content continues to be released
on CD's. Given a choice between ripping a 30-40 minute album in a
couple of minutes with a CD ripper and ripping 40 minutes worth of
DRM protected files in real time with Jack, who would have the
patience to use a Jack like application for that purpose? Too time
consuming.
After all, there is still nothing stopping you from plugging an
optical cable from the digital output of your mac to the input and
doing exactly what Jack can enable, or using a wire and recording it
analog - which will still sound excellent, by the way, depending on
the quality of the converters in your computer.
The people who are most interested in technology like Jack are pro-
audio users. There are some things that you can't easily do with some
DAW's that you can accomplish with Jack, for instance:
* Export multiple softsynth tracks to audio files simultaniously from
Cubase. - saves me days of work.
* route audio to AU plugins and back from a VST Host
* vice versa
* send the audio from multiple sound generating applications into
another app for processing.
* other applications that haven't been thought of yet.
These functions can be used on a much grander scale than merely
bootlegging your favorite artist's music - think about art
installations, video, theater production, museum exhibition audio
narration with music and sound from multiple sources, etc etc etc.
If, as Steve Jobs said, over 2 billion songs sold on Itunes as of Jan
2007, then why worry about it at all?
