ALAC bit depth hint

I am attempting to  set the kAudioConverterPropertyBitDepthHint attempt to 16 as suggested here:

The converter is configured to take native endian Float 32 audio and convert it to ALAC. However, I keep getting the error kAudioConverterErr_PropertyNotSupported. 

Does anybody have any suggestions or example of this property in use?  Thanks!
