I would like to be able to play back mp4 audio files with afplay. Playback of other file formats works fine with AIFF or mp3, but I get a 'typ?' error with mp4 files.

Try setting the file-type-hint parameter when opening the AudioFile. Use kAudioFileM4AType for regular ".m4a" files, or kAudioFileAAC_ADTSType for ADTS (I think that's ".aac".)
