The only application I have come across that does this is Real Media TM
Player Center Pro Magic Edition (or whatever it's called) on Windows
and it's a really obnoxious thing to do.
I agree. Applications should set their own volume, *not* the system
volume.
In general, I fully agree.
That said, exceptions to the rule apply. In my case, the app is very
custom tailored for a customer, and without going into too much detail, I
think it is OK
Another exception to the rule is when building a general utility for
controlling volume for any application, even those not written yet, perhaps
by using remote means (RF, IR, IP, USB etc.) and also in cases when the
actual audio interface does not provide programmatic volume control,
built-in digital output being the simplest example.
