Jens,
Can you refer me to a specific AudioQueue project that (1) I can compile and run using Xcode 3; (2) produces actual sounds out of the Mac speakers; (3) is written in C/Objective-C?

The new AudioQueue API in Leopard (10.5) sounds like just what you want. It's a higher-level interface for clients that just want to play or record audio without having to worry about details of AudioUnits or threads. And unlike most of Core Audio, there's actually decent documentation in the reference library. (As well as sample code in /Developer/Examples/CoreAudio/.)Roland Silver
