I am surprised that Benchmark chose USB, since that interface requires jitter removal.

It's driverless, cheap, and TI makes some pretty good parts that do everything you need.

No matter how good your jitter removal, it's never as good as a local, crystal clock.

I've done an outboard DAC that actually uses the analog output from one of these TI parts -- I rely on the part to do all the PLL, clock recovery, and D-to-A. This was for internal use at a large mastering house and the "golden-ears" at the facility had to sign off on it by doing some (ostensibly) double-blind testing against the DACs they were used to using. They all signed off.

According to Dan Lavry, FireWire is too expensive to develop for, although with his prices I don't see how it would be much different.

We're small manufacturers and the up-front costs for using even a "canned" solution like the DICEII from TCTechnologies are more than we can often absorb. There are other pre-engineered solutions from companies like BridgeCo, but what you'd save in engineering costs you end up spending on licensing and minimum quantities. (Not to speak for Dan, but we sell to the same customers).

Sorry to talk near-audiophile language here, but this list combines a unique collection of software engineers and FireWire designers (Metric Halo and maybe even MOTU and RME).

And hello from Z-Systems.

I have been trying to identify the ultimate audio interface for Mac, along with the correct software to drive it. I am up to the task of developing the software, and even drivers if need be, but the research on the possibilities for hardware is still ongoing.

Unless you're willing to drill a hole through the case, I think you're stuck with either asynchronous or isochronous.
