Mixing line-in + internal audio

Hello developers!

I have a serious problem/question relating to
Mac core audio.

I need to MIX incoming audio [via the G5 audio
line-in ports] with internal Mac audio generated
by MOTU's "Symphonic Instruments."
Many moons ago, I think it was OS 10 or 10.1 I
could do this seemingly automatically: Whatever
came through my speakers was also able to be
captured by "Sound Studio" or "Audio HiJack Pro."

Somewhere, this changed, much to my dismay.
I have asked on various forums and have gotten no
answer, which I desperately seek! I've installed
"Soundflower" and "LineIN" and made an aggregate
device for Mac's audio-midi setup, all to no avail.

Audio generated by MUTO-SI, or iTunes, etc all come
out of my speakers and bus to HiJack to be recorded,
but I can't seem to figure out how to mix in the Line-In
audio. I can get the input meter on the "Sound" panel
to register input on either line-in, or aggregate device,
but it goes no further. Why?

I need this setup to blend audio from 5 external rack mounts
with sounds generated in the computer by "Symphonic Instruments"
whether I'm composing in Finale, or when I use Digital Performer
to make a final demo mix.

As I said, this once happened all by itself in an earlier OS.
Now, nobody seems to know how to get OS 10.4.11 to do it again!

I need simple instructions as to what I need to do, or buy,
and how to "string it all together." [Yes, I'm 57, so I still
conceive in terms of black boxes connected by wires!]

Can someone PLEASE help me because this affects my business,
and my work around of externally mixing both sources to a
Sony mini-disc recorder, then recording BACK into my Mac to
edit, tweak, etc, is a real time-waster!

Thank you,

Bob Wendel, NYC
